The medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe close to Devonport.
North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital both have busy emergency and general medical departments. There are anaesthetic services provided at both sites however primarily based at NWRH. A busy general orthopaedic and general surgical service is based at NWRH with the MCH providing predominately day surgery cases. There are extensive outpatient services for a range of subspecialty services many of which are provided by visiting specialists from Launceston General Hospital, Royal Hobart Hospital and major hospitals in Victoria.
The maternity unit, housing the birthing suite and all inpatient maternity patients for the region, is located at North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie. There are approximately 1000 births annually and staffing includes experienced midwives with highly respected MGP and KYM schemes. High risk births are managed in conjunction with the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) and Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) supported by the local endocrinology and diabetic teams.
The outreach services are located at picturesque regional centres which include the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe, West Coast District Hospital, Smithton District Hospital and King Island District Hospital and Health Centre (via scenic flights for those interested).
The North West Private Hospital is co-located with the North West Regional Hospital and this facilitates private practice for many of the region's specialists.
You will provide specialist diagnosis, treatment and care for public patients servicing a population of approximately 116,000.
You will provide a consultative service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to other disciplines and all hospitals within THS – North West Region. The unit is supported by a Level 4 Neonatal Unit and an 8 bed Level 4 Intensive Care Unit.
Current senior staffing includes five full-time Staff Specialists and 1 part-time VMO. The NWRH is RANZCOG accredited for 2 core trainees.
Excellent continuing education opportunities are led by training Registrars (as part of the Tasmanian ITP).
There are ample opportunities to maintain gynae surgical skills, with a minimum of 1 list per week per Staff Specialist.
The on call requirement is a 1 in 4.
New Fellows are encouraged to apply with supportive senior staff and a supportive team environment.
Solid generalist O&G skills are preferred.
There is opportunity to develop special interest skills in areas such as urodynamics, colposcopy, advanced laparoscopy and high risk pregnancy.
THS – North West Region offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School located at both Burnie and Latrobe. As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology Education Program.
There are strong research links with the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School. Opportunities for research interests especially in rural health and Tertiary study opportunities are available.
