The Organisation
This hospital and health service provides health services to a fast growing regional area. Across the health service, a range of specialty services are provided including acute care, surgical, medical, maternity, mental health rehabilitation and aged care services. The Hospitals provide care in some major adult specialties and provide support to the surrounding smaller rural hospitals in the health service.
The renal service comprises two dialysis units, with capacity of up to 40 and 28 patients respectively operating on a 2-shift model. There are additional 2 spaces for home haemodialysis training and a separate room for training for peritoneal dialysis. The department runs a busy outpatient service as would be expected with a catchment population of nearly 110,000 people with an age curve markedly skewed to the right. People over 65 years of age comprise nearly 25% of the population. In addition to dialysis, the department provides long term follow up to approximately 55 transplant patients, some with dual transplants and occasional non kidney transplant patients.
