The Organisation
This health service serves one of the States leading tourist destinations, which has a resident population of 17,000 and expands to 55,000 during the tourist season. The health service provides hospital, aged care, community and public health and mental health services to an area of 424,517 sq km. The hospital is a well-equipped 60-bed inpatient facility providing medical, surgical, paediatric, maternity and emergency services. Its obstetric services cater for low and medium risk deliveries. It is the largest hospital in the region with access to travel by road and aircraft.
The facility has a busy 8-bed inpatient unit, a level 2 nursery with regional neonatal transports, and a fascinating outpatient program across the region. They have a strong teaching focus, providing supervision of RACP and prevocational trainees, and opportunities to engage in Population Health and research activities. The team aims to set the standard for remote specialist services in Australia. Case mix, including acuity and activity is highly varied, with 25 000 presentations per year to the Emergency Department. Facilities include operating theatres, consulting rooms for visiting specialists, a public dental surgery, refurbished maternity unit and an expanded emergency department which has more than doubled in size to 15 acute bays.
The Job

As Consultant Paediatrician, you will provide a high standard of general paediatric specialist services, including community, neonatal retrieval, outpatient, and inpatient services

You will provide a visiting community focussed specialist paediatric service to other sites including remote communities and this will include outpatient and inpatient services

Consultant Paediatricians will participate in the after hours, weekend, and public holiday on-call roster in association with the other Paediatricians and Paediatric Registrars.

In addition you will provide leadership, supervision and education to medical staff, nurses, medical students, Aboriginal Health Workers, allied health and other health professionals

You will perform remote area medical clinics as directed by Director Medical Services and liaise closely with, and support, other medical practitioners and visiting specialists

Fixed-term full time appointment for 5 years, with the possibility of extension

Requirements

Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) in Paediatrics
-
Fellowship of the Royal Australasia College of Physicians (Paediatrics and Child Health Division) or equivalent

Neonatal and diverse general paediatric & developmental experience is desirable.

Previous experience in remote area medicine or Indigenous health is desirable.
