You will provide a high standard of surgical care and have the opportunity to treat a varied, challenging caseload.
In addition you will provide leadership, supervision and education to trainee Medical Officers and participate in the on call roster.
It is anticipated you will have experience in General Surgery in a regional and remote hospital setting.
This 100-bed hospital is the largest regional public hospital in WA. The hospital supports medical students through the Rural Clinical School, junior doctors rotating from Perth, Workplace Based Assessment doctors and registrars across a number of specialties. Fly in fly out clinicians and private clinicians provide additional supportive health services to the region.
The 24 hour Emergency Department has an annual presentation rate of 18,000 - 22,000 patients per year, including paediatrics and major trauma (linked with the Trauma Registry at Royal Perth Hospital).
The operating suite comprises 2 theatres performing 4,000 surgical cases per annum. Trauma is common with motor vehicle accidents and mining injuries comprising most of the trauma. There is a 5-bed coronary care/high dependency unit.
The busy 34-bed surgical ward caters for orthopaedics, general surgery and gynaecology. Visiting specialists also provide ENT, urology and ophthalmology. There is a modern, purpose-built 11-bed day ward for recovering patients following surgical, endoscopies and short-stay procedures.
The 29-bed medical ward sees a wide variety of medical conditions including chemotherapy services. There is a 16-bed restorative care unit for rehabilitation of patient's post-orthopaedic surgery and acute medical events; respite care and palliative care.
The 20-bed maternity unit has 3 birthing suites and a low-intervention family birthing suite, and Mother Earth Room. It is a very busy unit with an average of 800 deliveries per annum.
The Children’s Ward is a level 2 Special Care Nursery and provides care from neonates to adolescents. The ward has a 21-bed capacity (2 HDU level beds) and the nursery a 3-bed capacity.
The 7-bed mental health unit includes inpatient beds and a secure observation room.
There is a stand-alone dialysis service that has facilities to dialyse 18 patients three times weekly.
This dynamic and sophisticated regional centre is situated inland of Perth and has many chain stores and services. Sport facilities, clubs and societies and social services abound to support a good work life balance. Community is a key strength of the town.
Being located inland the weather is peri-desert and there is weekend access to the beach community of Esperance. What's more, the flight time to Perth is a short 1.10 hours.
The region supports a wide range of industries, including mining, agriculture, aquaculture and tourism. The mining workforce population brings a lively, friendly culture to the city.
Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent.
Eligible for registration with AHPRA as a Specialist.
Member of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA) desirable.
