Australia needs more psychiatrists, and the need is particularly significant in areas outside the major cities. Workforce data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows the psychiatrist workforce has grown only modestly over the past two decades, from around 12.6 full-time equivalent psychiatrists per 100,000 people in 2000 to about 15.2 per 100,000 more recently, while most of that workforce remains concentrated in metropolitan areas. In NSW alone, health workforce modelling suggests the state needs an extra 14 to 16 new consultant psychiatrists entering the workforce every year through to 2035 just to keep pace with demand. Overseas-trained specialists already make up a substantial share of the practising rural and regional workforce, and that reliance is expected to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you’re an international medical graduate (IMG) with specialist psychiatry qualifications, this workforce shortage creates opportunities to build a career in Australia. However, the pathway to practising as a consultant psychiatrist in Australia isn’t always straightforward. This guide walks through the main pathways for international psychiatrists, based on the current requirements of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), so you can understand which route may apply to you and what to expect at each stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Three Main Pathways for International Psychiatrists<\/b><\/h2>\n

There are three main pathways to consider, depending on your qualifications, eligibility and career plans:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Specialist assessment<\/b> – for psychiatrists who already hold specialist qualifications and want their training assessed against RANZCP\u2019s Fellowship standard. This is the main pathway for overseas-trained psychiatrists seeking recognition towards Fellowship.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Area of Need (AoN) positions<\/b> – for psychiatrists who have a job offer in a position that has been designated as an Area of Need. AoN assessment is separate from specialist assessment and can be applied for at the same time. If approved, registration is restricted to the specific AoN position.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. RANZCP Fellowship Training Program<\/b> – the standard psychiatry training program, which takes a minimum of five years full-time equivalent and is the pathway used by doctors training towards Fellowship in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. It may be an option for IMGs who are not eligible for, or are not found comparable through, specialist assessment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For most IMG psychiatrists who already hold a specialist qualification, specialist assessment is the main pathway to consider. If your training is assessed as substantially or partially comparable, you may be able to progress towards Fellowship through the requirements set out in your assessment outcome, rather than completing the full Fellowship Training Program.<\/span><\/p>\n
