Junior Doctors Planning to Work in Australia in 2027: What You Need To Know

The 2027 Australian recruitment cycle is officially underway. Explore our timeline of campaign dates and learn how to position yourself for success.

RMO Doctor Jobs Australia

If you are a junior doctor planning a move to Australia in 2027, understanding how recruitment actually works is essential.

One of the most common misconceptions is that agencies place candidates directly into hospital campaign jobs.

We don’t.

If you want to be considered for Australia’s structured junior doctor roles, you must apply directly to the state health recruitment campaigns yourself. Agencies like ours do not recruit into these campaign positions. Instead, we support hospitals with workforce needs outside of these processes – particularly locum work, urgent vacancies, and roles that arise throughout the year.

To maximise your chances in Australia, you need to understand and engage with both pathways.

The Annual Recruitment Campaigns

Each Australian state and territory runs structured annual recruitment campaigns for:

  • Interns
  • Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) / HMOs
  • Senior RMOs / SRMOs
  • Registrars (including unaccredited and training roles)

These campaigns are:

  • Run directly by health departments and hospitals
  • Highly structured and time-limited
  • The primary entry point into hospital training and rotational roles
  • The most competitive recruitment pathway each year

Note: If you miss the campaign window, you may need to wait a full year for the next intake (depending on state and role type).

If you want to be considered for campaign roles, you must apply directly through the relevant health system. Agencies cannot submit applications or influence outcomes within these systems.

Beyond the Recruitment Campaigns: Our Area of Expertise

While we do not recruit into campaign roles, we instead partner with hospitals to support:

  • Non-campaign permanent and fixed-term roles
  • Rural and regional workforce gaps
  • Last-minute or unfilled positions
  • Locum placements (short-term and urgent cover)
  • Year-round hospital staffing needs

Hospitals recruit year-round because the workforce is fluid. Doctors move interstate, change training pathways, or take leave, creating unexpected gaps that the annual campaign doesn’t cover. So while campaigns are the structured intake system, they are not the only source of jobs.

Why Now Matters for 2027

If you are a junior doctor planning for 2027, this is your preparation window. Campaigns are competitive, and time-sensitive. Strong preparation includes:

  • Australian-style CV preparation
  • Referee alignment and readiness
  • State selection strategy
  • Awareness of each campaign’s deadlines
  • Understanding training pathways (intern → RMO → registrar)
  • AHPRA registration planning

Why You Should Still Register With Elective Recruitment

Even if your main focus is the campaign process, registering with us gives you access to opportunities outside of it.

We will:

  • Notify you of non-campaign roles
  • Alert you to urgent hospital vacancies
  • Help you access rural and regional positions
  • Keep you updated on real-time workforce needs

For many doctors, registering with us provides a path into securing longer-term training roles or locum opportunities.

In Short:

The Australian junior doctor job market has two parallel systems:

  1. Annual recruitment campaigns

👉 You must apply directly via official health services

  1. Year-round hospital workforce needs

👉 Where agencies support non-campaign and locum roles

To maximise your opportunities in 2027, you should engage with both and right now is exactly the right time to get organised.
